Freedom Fighters

As part of our Vinyl.EU editions, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Zamrock legends WITCH’s scarce 7″ “Freedom Fighter” with a limited edition pressing, hand numbered with an informative insert, unlocking the mystery of how the WITCH shifted from Zamrock to Disco. YouTube has given record collectors a platform for sharing lost, displaced, forgotten gems that we may never have had the chance to wrap our ears around. Often the artists don’t even have a physical copy of their own record, and their music is rediscovered by fellow family members reaching out in the comment sections. “Freedom Fighter”, which has been overlooked until now, is a missing link in the WITCH story. It unlocks the mystery of how they transitioned at the beginning of the 1980s from prog rock sensibilities to the synth-licked beats that would characterise their later boogie albums. Prior to the reissue, the record had been gathering attention on Copenhagen dance floors thanks to a local record dealer who has been specialising in selling Zambian records for the past decade. The original pressing of the record that we created the reissue from also appears on our 2nd VF Live feature prior to this project being conceived. “Many

Label Spotlight: STRATA-EAST

Founded in 1971 by jazz trumpeter Charles Tolliver and pianist Stanley Cowell, STRAT-EAST took inspiration from the Detroit’s music-led collective STRATA; record label born prior by former Blue Note artist Kenny Cox in the late 1960s. STRATA-EAST became a vital platform for the independent jazz movement that emerged from civil rights movement in the 1970s and released over 50 albums, all unique and of artistic excellence. However the independent musician-owned label may not have survived if it wasn’t for the success of Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson ‘Winter In America’ featuring hit single ‘The Bottle’, enabling the label pay off debts and continue to function, with it’s contracts weighted in favor of the artists. Presentation and quality was a central part of the creative vision and the recordings were pressed in limited numbers which added to their cult status. The label’s logo, designed by Ted Plair also set the tone for the graphic style using mostly black and white imagery. The label’s releases are now hailed as prime examples of Post-bop, Avant-garde, Spiritual Jazz, and Afro Jazz. A fun fact: Spike Lee’s father, Bill Lee was involved in numerous releases as was Clifford Jordan. As featured on the back cover of Glass

Bikes & Vinyl

We are just as passionate about bicycles as music at Vinyl.eu. Here we have the fastest road bike from 2008, originally owned by former professional German cyclist Gerald Ciolek; a prominent member of the HTC team, “the first team who really fought against doping and since we took doping “away” from the riders, they needed something else. And it became this bike, the fastest bike ever – back in 2008” – Brian Holm Ciolek was seen as an instrumental figure in all four of Mark Cavendish’s stage wins of the 2008 Le Tour de France and was the youngest rider ever to win the German National Road Race Championship, aged 18.
